Official biography

Ryan Thompson was appointed as an i mmigration judge to begin hearing cases in October 2025. Judge Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2006 from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and a Juris Doctor in 2013 from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphrey's School of Law. From 2024 to 2025, he was an assistant chief counsel with the Office of the Principal Legal Advisor, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Department of Homeland Security. From 2014 to 2024, he was an assistant district attorney general at the Shelby County District Attorney General's Office in Memphis, Tennessee, and during this time in 2023, he was a legal advisor for the Memphis Police Department. In 2014 he was in private practice with the Ward Law Firm PLLC in Munford, Tennessee. From 2007 to 2014, he was a Memphis police officer. From 2006 to 2025, Judge Thompson also served with the Tennessee National Guard as a combat medic, intelligence officer, defense counsel, trial counsel and senior defense counsel. During this time from 2017 to 2020, he served with the 194th Engineer Brigade and deployed to the Middle East from 2019 to 2020 in support of Operation Spartan Shield, receiving the Meritorious Service Medal and an Army Commendation Medal with “C” Device. Judge Thompson is a member of the Tennessee Bar.

Education: Judge Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2006 from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and a Juris Doctor in 2013 from the University of Memphis, Cecil C.

Bar admission: Judge Thompson is a member of the Tennessee Bar.
