Lionel Martin was appointed as a temporary immigration judge to begin hearing cases in February 2026. Judge Martin earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1996 from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater and a Juris Doctor in 1999 from the University of Houston Law Center. From 2022 to January 2026, he served as a labor and employment attorney with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. From 2002 to 2010, and 2011 to 2022, he was in private practice with various law firms in Houston. From 2010 to 2011, he was a special assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas, Waco Division. From 1999 to 2002, he was on active duty as a judge advocate in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG). Since 2002, he has also served as a judge advocate in the U.S. Army Reserve JAG including a deployment to the Middle East in Support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Spartan Shield). He holds the rank of lieutenant colonel. Judge Martin is a member of the State Bar of Texas.
