Kevin Newton Buras was appointed as an immigration judge to begin hearing cases in October 2025. Judge Buras earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1991 from the University of Texas, Austin, and a Juris Doctor in 2001 from South Texas College of Law Houston. From 2019 to 2025, he served as an assistant chief counsel with the Office of the Principal Legal Advisor, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Houston, where he was a national security designated attorney. From 2011 to 2019, he served as an asylum officer and then senior asylum officer at the Houston Asylum Office, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, DHS. From 2007 to 2010, he was in private practice. From 2004 to 2007, he served as an assistant criminal district attorney in Galveston County, Texas. Judge Buras deployed twice to Afghanistan as an Army engineer and retired from the Army Reserve as a colonel in 2020. Judge Buras is a member of the State Bar of Texas.
